1. The dollar value of your car:
First, Nigerian customs generates these values via the VIN or chassis number of each vehicle; it is an automated system. It is the generated fixed cost price of the car you intend to import.

2. The CBN exchange rate:
Which is currently ₦1,537.82 and is subject to change at intervals.
While this exchange rate is subject to change at intervals (depending on the strength of ₦), we will keep you informed of any change in the exchange rate, thus affecting the cost of clearing cars in Nigeria.
3. The percentage of duty to be paid:
Currently, there is a 20% import duty and 15% levies for used and new cars.
In addition, these are fixed values for cars and vehicles; other industrial vehicles may attract a lower CET.

4. Other Taxes To be Paid
Other taxes are 7.5% VAT, 0.5% ETL, and 7.0% SUR.
Furthermore, points 1 to 4 will give you the total value of your car due to be paid to Nigerian Customs at any designated bank.
With the Nigeria Customs Tariff Book, step-by-step to calculate total customs duty:
- Dollar Value of Car x CBN Exchange Rate x Percentage of Duty = Import Duty
- Dollar Value of Car x CBN Exchange Rate x Percentage of Levy = Levy
- Dollar Value of Car x CBN Exchange Rate x Percentage of ETL = ETL
- import Duty of Car in Naira x Percentage of SUR = SUR (Surcharge)
- Dollar Value of Car x CBN Exchange Rate + Import Duty + Levy + ETL + SUR = Total x Percentage of VAT = VAT
- Import Duty + Levy + ETL + SUR + VAT = Total Customs Duty payable
practical example:
if our car’s dollar value is $4,500 using the formula and percentages above
- $4,500 x ₦1,587.82 x 20% = ₦1,445,239 (import Duty) (write answers down)
- $4,500 x ₦1,587.82 x 15% = ₦1,083,930 (Levy)
- $4,500 x ₦1,587.82 x 0.5% = ₦36,131 (ETL)
- ₦1,445,239 x 7.0% = ₦101,167 (SUR)
- $4,500 x ₦1,587.82 + ₦1,445,239 + ₦1,083,930 + ₦36,131 + ₦101,167 = ₦9,892,658 x 7.5% = ₦741,950 (VAT)
- ₦1,445,239 + ₦1,083,930 + ₦36,131 + ₦101,167 + ₦741,950 = ₦3,408417 (Total Customs Duty Payable)

5. Shipping and terminal charges:
Furthermore, shipping and terminal charges vary. Cars, SUVs, and trucks approximate costs are from ₦150,000 to ₦200,000.

But while your CET table indicates up to 75% aggregate (35 + 5 + 35, or 20 + 5 + 50) for some line items, the actual Customs spreadsheet doesn’t reflect such. It is usually 40% (5 + 35, or 35 + 5). Kindly recheck, reconfirm and clarify please. Thanks in advance.
